History

Year Major Trends of RFID Baggage Tag ASTREC/ARTA Activity History
1995-1999 - In order to reduce lost baggage and reinforce security, European and U.S.major airlines and TSA started experiments of RFID technology application to baggage tags, which has better automatic reading rate than bar-code tags.
- At IATA/ATA JPSC plenary meeting in 1999, the resolution was made to recommend 13.56MHz as RFID tag frequency.
2000 - The RFID Working Group (WG) was formed at IATA, and incorporated into BWG subgroup.
2001 - RFID-applied Airline Baggage Control System Workshop' was established in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism centered around NAA/JAL within the set period of the fiscal year 2001. - Right after the 11 September Attacks, 13.56MHz RFID verification tests were conducted mainly at Narita Airport, involving Hong Kong, Singapore, San Francisco and Vancouver Airports. The effectiveness of RFID technology for the baggage tag was successfully verified.
- The fruit of the experiment from October 15 to 18 was exhibited in the Exhibition held at IATA/ATA JPSC 2001 (Vienna) by Japan Consortium.
